January 2015-2016 Enhancing Export Competitiveness of the Avocado sector

Project Implementer: ITC – International Trade Centre- Multi agency of the UN and WTO
Supporting institutions: Fpeak, Hcd, Ministry Of Agriculture; Murang’a County Government
Project purpose: Link avocado farmers in Murang’a County with Exporters of Avocadoes from Kenya, to achieve the following objectives.
1. Increase the amount of money the farmers will make by eliminating the middlemen. This has the multiple effect of increasing incomes at rural areas and reducing poverty
2. Enable export companies to have more fruit from farmers, increasing reliability and quality.
3. Train farmers on quality aspects and GAP- Good Agricultural Practices

Consulted for a company that is growing fruits and Vegetables for Local Market but soon planning to grow products for export market in Europe, Asia and Africa. It involved drawing detailed Road Map plan from Farm preparation, Farming Needs, Global Gap Compliance requirements, packing and Export standards required. This covered all the Key requirements including Challenges to expect and Mitigation interventions. I also helped them to market their products by linking them to local market outlets chains for their farm products.

September to November 2013

Conducted a Potato Value Chain Baseline Survey in Kenya Project funded by Solidaridad, HIVOS and SNV, a programme to expand and deepen the supply of high quality potatoes. The smallholder farmers are integrated and linked to an existing large scale buyers, hotel chains, market intermediaries and aggregators of the small fast foods outlets. The baseline survey was commissioned to collect data on crop production data, economic status of the farmers, marketing, food security and constraints. The survey comprised of a purposely selected key players in the potato value chain. The survey utilized four methods (and the relevant tools) to collect data namely:
• Questionnaire – to collect objective data on contents and processes, as well as participants’ views on the various survey questions;
• Semi-structured Interview – this method was used to seek in-depth information from key informants, allowing for informant’s expression of view, and probing for certain dimensions;
• Focus Group Discussion (FGD) – this method was used to seek consensus of informants (mainly project beneficiaries), especially on aspects of relevance, effectiveness, impact, sustainability and any other key issues raised by the survey that demand a ‘community’s standpoint’.
• Non-participant Observation – this method comprised of observational confirmation of project products, as well as qualities of the local environments;
